ANIMAL RIGHTS AFRICA PROJECTS UPDATE

Ubuntu project

The Ubuntu Youth Project is a community-based project which is working against the culture of violence to create a caring society by teaching young children to care for all living beings. It engages with children in impoverished communities who are often exposed to high levels of abuse, not only towards women and children but also towards animals. Currently the project is active in two schools in two provinces in South Africa with the objective being to spread throughout South Africa.

The Ubuntu Youth Club is based on three tenets: Respect yourself, Respect others, Respect nature. Through their outreach programmes the Ubuntu Youth 'Peace Messengers' have come to be respected by the community. The project is rooted in the notion of anti-violence and fulfils a much needed role in a (South African) society which is currently considered one of the most violent in the world. This project is also quite unique in that it combines a changing of attitude towards animals as well as humans, making a difference in the lives of all.

Ubuntu is an African concept and has been described as a philosophy of life encompassing the concepts of personhood, humanity, humanness and morality. When someone is spoken of as having 'ubuntu', it means that they are generous, hospitable, friendly, caring and compassionate. It is interpreted to mean that the humanity of others is inextricably linked with their own humanity.

The project works with local animal organisations such as CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) to assist the animals in need in the areas where Ubuntu operates and to cooperate on joint projects such as kennel building, spayathons, administration of basic medicines and inoculations.
