Circuses
WHY? There are many reasons why animals don’t belong in the circus:
- They are forced to live in cramped, unsuitable conditions for most of their lives
- They spend their lives getting lugged from one circus site to the next
- They are forced to perform in conditions which are alien to their nature
- They spend their lives deprived of the opportunity to live as nature intended
- They are reduced to objects of entertainment and amusement
- Methods used to train and subdue them are questionable
- No circus animal chooses to spend its life in the circus
Do you ever consider what kind of life a circus animal is forced to live? Do you ever wonder what it must be like for an animal to be moved from one temporary circus site to the next for its entire performing life? Do you really believe that animals enjoy life in the circus?
Animals are in the circus because circus owners believe performing animals are a source of fascination and amusement to the public, and your attendance at the circus confirms this.
Animals are in the circus because of weak animal protection laws.
Throughout the world there are fantastic circuses that feature only human acts of skill and amusement. We can do the same here in South Africa. We are not against the circus… but we are against animal acts.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Don’t support circuses featuring animal acts
- Write to your local authority objecting to the use of public land by circuses featuring animal acts
- Write letters to your local newspaper pointing out why animals don’t belong in the circus
- Write to government demanding the introduction of legislation which would outlaw animal acts in circuses
- Support campaigns to publicise the plight of circus animals and encourage public boycotts of circuses featuring animal acts.
THE CIRCUS DEPENDS ON YOUR SUPPORT FOR ITS SURVIVAL. THE EASIEST WAY TO GET ANIMAL ACTS OUT OF THE CIRCUS IS FOR YOU NOT TO SUPPORT THE CIRCUS AS LONG AS IT FEATURES ANIMAL ACTS
