A Poem for the Elephants

elephant

our earth is shrinking
our numbers are dwindling
our body parts commodities
jewelry made from ivory and hair
for the rich and the rest
were we humans
there would be distain and despair
but we're not – we are elephants

our inner energy cannot be culled
the songs in our being
resonating with the songs of earth
in our hearts the wisdom of stars and the first time

we know

we know of love and patience
of connect and caring
we know of the human fear of freedom
killing and culling to feed their ego
to control a world they don't understand
