Culling Elephants
The real word for this is KILLING but the forces that be make sure that we are shielded from the truth. The African Elephant which is the largest land mammal has been pushed to the brink of extinction because of the demand for ivory. It is at the centre of debates about ecology, ethics and trade and has become the symbol of the political battle over the international trade in endangered animals. But it is because of their intelligence, and because they have emotions like us, and because of the connection we feel with them that elephants should be of particular concern to us. It is difficult to calculate elephant population numbers accurately, but it is thought that there may have been around 3 to 5 million elephants in the 1930's and 1940's. By 1980 there were said to be 1.3 million and their population has now dwindled to somewhere between 272 000 to 660 000. It is so much cheaper for conservationists to go in and cull a family of elephants than it is to dart them and move them carefully and with great patience and effort.
